Choquequirao 7 Days, Choquequirao (choquequirau) is located in the Vilcabamba Valley in the province of La Convención – Cusco at an altitude of 3300 m.s.n.m. and at 1500 m. over the roaring waters of the Apurímac River.According to the chronicles Choquequirao was the last Inca refuge from 1536.

Choquequirao comes from the meaning chuqui that means gold and from the word k’iraw that means cradle, that is to say “Cradle of Gold”.

The construction consists of terraces and buildings at different levels, from the lowest level known as Sunch’u Pata to the highest truncated top.

The archaeological center is known as the “Sacred Sister” for being as important as Machu Picchu, for its architecture and design used in construction. The city is an inspiring example of a ceremonial center of the Inca elite, dedicated to the worship of the gods of the mountain, the river and the elements of nature.

The landscape is spectacular, the enclosure is surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks, the main one the Salkantay snow-capped mountain and by deep slopes of vegetation typical of the jungle.

Day 1: CUSCO – CAPULICHAYOC – CHIQUISKA – ROSALINDA BEACH

We pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 am and go with our private transport to the town of Capuliyoc (3150msnm). During the trip that lasts about 4 hours, we can enjoy the first beautiful views of the typical villages, valleys and snowy peaks. We find our porters and their horses that we carry. There, at the viewpoint of Capuliyoc, we took advantage of the great view over the Apurímac canyon and the snow-capped Padreyoc (5571msnm), as well as the location of Choquequirao. Full of enthusiasm, we started our trek by a descent of about 3 hours and arrived at the town of Chiquisca for lunch. After lunch we resume the walk downhill for a couple of hours to the town of Playa Rosalinas (1900msnm) where a delicious lunch awaits us. We enjoyed the tropical tranquility of the place and spent the night.

Day 2: ROSALINDA BEACH – MARAMPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO

At the beginning of the day we crossed the river on a pedestrian bridge. From here we walk uphill for half a day until we reach Marampata, a small meadow where we have lunch. As we climb the steep path, we can appreciate the entire area of ​​the canyon, its vegetation and the environment that surrounds it. The afternoon walk will not be as steep as we approach the valley that houses the Choquequirao complex. We camped in a flat area near the archaeological site that we can explore a little before nightfall.

Day 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO – PINCHIUNUYOC

We are lucky to complete the visit of this exceptional archaeological site and then we can rest until lunch. In the afternoon we start the hike uphill by a spur to the vestiges of Pinchiunuyoc where we set up our camp.

Day 4: PINCHIUNUYOC – RIO BLANCO – MAIZAL

After a delicious breakfast we go down for 2 hours to the white river (1990msnm) where we rest for a while. Then we started a long climb of about 4 hours to the village of Maizal. Along the way, we can marvel at the great diversity of microclimates, flora and fauna and wonderful landscapes. We take a break for lunch and then we resume our walk until we reach Maizal where we camp.

Day 5: MAIZAL – YANAMA – TOTORA – LUCMABAMBA

We start the walk at 7am for about 3 hours through the jungle edge until we reach the Victoria mine. After the visit of this, we resume our journey for 1 hour until we reach the Victoria pass (4130msnm). After having enjoyed the beautiful panoramic view, we followed the Inca trail made of stone steps to the Victoria mine and continued downhill to the village of Yanama where we had lunch. Then we take a collective bus that takes us to Lucmabamba. During the tour we can enjoy the amazing views of the snowcapped mountains and waterfalls.

Day 6: LUCMABAMBA – LLACTAPATA – AGUAS CALIENTES

We start the hike along the old Inca trail, climbing through the misty forest for about 3 hours. We reach Puncuyoc pass and continue down to the archaeological site of Llactapata located at 2700msnm. From there we enjoyed a moment of the unique perspective on the citadel of Machu Picchu. Then we resume our descent for a couple of hours to the hydroelectric plant where we had lunch. Then we walked along the railway line admiring the surroundings of Machu Picchu and arrived at Aguas Calientes where we spent the night.

Day 7: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO

This day we will walk from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu (2400m), an hour and a half. There is also an option to take a bus ($ 12 only for a stay). When we arrive our guide will begin with the guided tour of the Inca city of Machu Picchu. After the guided tour of the park you will have a couple of free hours to explore the archaeological park. Then you will go back to Aguas Calientes, rest, and then take the train to Ollantaytambo where a car will be waiting to take you back to Hotel in Cusco.

NOTE: the entrance to the citadel of Machupicchu will take place in the morning shift, if in case you wish to stay all day you must pay another entrance for the afternoon (notice from the culture ministry).
